Rushen Castle

Virginia broke a mug this morning on this day when more clouds were in evidence. So we got a replacement on a trip into Castletown, I had hoped it would be less than £5 so we could use the Manx £5 note from yesterday but it wasn't to be.

It was easier parking in Castletown than I expected, but I was a little worried leaving the car as the ticket machine wasn't behaving. We saw Rushen Castle, well a little of it. Didn't climb the spiral staircase to eyeball the prison cells. The Nautical Museum was closed which was a shame.

Rushen Abbey

Not so far away was Rushen Abbey or the remains thereof. A very well done exhibition about the place and the monks. Not so much to see on the ground as it got demolished at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Rushen Abbey had gone through a number of phases after the monks - a Deemster held court there, young ladies were taught, jam was made, people danced the night away. Quite a lot to keep children busy there, Virginia managed on her first try to lob a ball through a hole marked Cambridge.

Walked into Port Erin and tried to get rid of the Manx £5 note by buying a packet of Doritos - ended up with 3 Manx £1 notes! We had a good meal at the Station Hotel.
