Dreams

The Book of Dreams written in 1981 is the final book in Vance's Demon Princes series wherein Kirth Gersen exacts revenge on the 5 Demon princes for their destruction of his village.

The last demon prince is Howard Alan Treesong who is one of Vance's wackier villains, and has a disturbed (or disturbing) history like others of Vance's bad guys. In a comic sequence Treesong returns for a school reunion and exacts revenge on old schoolmates with the aid of henchmen.

Vance is not so happy writing female characters, they often are unfulfilled in Vance's books it seems to me (feel free to disagree). Alice Wroke in The Book of Dreams fares better than some of Vance's women as Gersen's love interest.

The book ends on a poignant note as Gersen bemoans the passing of all of his sworn enemies. What will he do now? What is the purpose of his life now?
