I quite liked the omelette I had for breakfast in the Hacienda Merida. Not sure what the other filling was besides spinach (or what I think was spinach) but it was tasty and I didn't had side effects. But I shouldn't have had breakfast this day. Because the day started with a taco eating crawl.
To my surprise Israel turned up again to take me on a solo tour of taco places in Merida. Poor guy was nearly hoarse and was sorry to be taking me. We voyaged around the more locally patronised parts of Merida - fish markets, taco alleys, sewing shops and pharmacies and wool shops and spice shops. All small local industries crammed into the available space.
The food was varied but I'm not a taco specialist. I didn't master how to eat them, one couldn't wrap the food in the taco, the hand sanitiser Israel handed me in a bag with a bottle of water and a fan came in handy as we proceeded. The tour finished up by seeing government offices by the big square which had pictures about Maya history, and with a very welcome coconut ice cream at a place there. We weren't too pestered by hawkers trying to offload cigars or tablecloths.
I did see Israel again when he came to tell me that my cantina tour was now 2pm and was going to be taken by someone else. Danny Cow (his surname was Vaca) took me to three very different but similar cantinas, which are like Mexican pubs. They all had loud to very loud music which made conversation tricky. At each you ordered drinks and got complimentary food, at the first two this was nachos with various items, at the last it was more cheap snacks.
At the first cantina I had lemonade which was fine. At the second I had a strawberry effort which gave me brain freeze. At the last (La Negrita) I had a Mexican liqueur X'tabentun which a clumsy waiter knocked over and I got even more of it. Very nice, aniseed or licorice flavour to it. At La Negrita the tables were randomly crammed together so moving between tables was a challenge.
In the evening I ate again at the Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca having beetroot soup (very nice don't think I've ever had beetroot soup before) and another dish I've forgotten the name of. It started raining while I was there and the roof must be partially open as water was trickling down the vegetation in the middle. If one had been at the La Negrita cantina this wouldn't have been much fun as that only had netting mostly for a roof.
