Teotihuacan and home
Thursday, 9th November 2023

A success at morning - managed to get orange juice at breakfast by saying the magic spell vaso de naranja. The power of sorcery. A large English group was leaving and their cases filled the hallways.

Teotihuacan

We voyaged out to Teotihuacan admiring the cable cars which have been installed to help transport people because the roads and metro and buses are so awful. I didn't manage to photograph the barbecue marquees along the road there selling food. Mexico could be described as a nation of shopkeepers almost.

Teotihuacan is a vast area, it was a long walk in the sun from the huge plaza with a pyramid with ornate carvings we started at to the Moon Pyramid. The Sun and Moon pyramids are huge but boring, there are murals on show in some of the noble's houses near the Moon Pyramid. Again plenty of people selling tat, including fake obsidian. The Aztecs called Teotihuacan the place where the gods were created because they dug up mammoth bones there.

Last organised tour was to the Shrine of Guadalupe which may or not have listed buildings but it has visibly listing buildings. A large mass was going on in the latest cathedral on the site, you can see Diego's infamous cloak in that cathedral. A long queue for confessions. An artistic clock tower repeats the legend on the hour. Plenty of stalls selling the produce of local silversmiths.

Churros

I found Juan's recommended churros place Churreria de More which was authentic and served up really long churros with dips. Worth experiencing. It did take me some effort in finding it. I tried Palacio del Belle Artes under my own steam, being a senior I was pleased to find I got in free. A friendly staff lady told me to wear my rucksack like a pregnant woman to proceed further. A lot of abstract art (missable to me) and large political murals. Nice building.

I had macaroon ice cream in a tub at one of many Santa Clara ice cream outlets (two of them were next door but one!). My excuse is I wanted to spend some of the pesos I still had and also leave my room 513 to be done. I left my rucksack containing rainproof behind and it thundered and rained as I returned!

And that was it for my holiday! Apart from suffering an upset stomach from my last meal in Mexico. Apart from the hotel shower door cutting my toe. Apart from waiting hours to be picked up to wait hours in the traffic to wait hours at the airport for the check in desks to open. Apart from waiting hours at an airport with no seating because the plane had been struck by lightning. Apart from missing a coach by a few minutes and waiting hours at Heathrow for the next. I did have an empty seat next to me on the flight home.
