After a difficult to sleep night due not to cries of baboons but rather to elephants making noises like my tent was being investigated. One had defecated on the path to the communal area.
Goodluck took me on a game drive from 7 to noon, I discovered he was Lutheran when he asked if I was a Christian. He worried me by saying tsetse flies were buzzing around, following our movement. He did say later they were small ones so less risk. It was very convenient being able to charge USB devices in the Toyota Land Cruiser.
We went around in a leisurely fashion, some vehicles charged around due to limited time. Their aim was just to cross key animals like giraffes and hippos and lions (hard) off the hit list then go on to the next area. We were staying inside the park so had more time. There being more vehicles going around can mean more dust but it also increases the chances of animals being spotted.
We saw the best hot spring where steaming sulphurous water bubbles to the surface, leaving a trail of algae to the lake. We saw monkeys picking over elephant dung for seeds the poor elephant digestive system ignores.
Lunch included a chocolate brownie Goodluck passed on, like I passed on the pineapple syrup slice from yesterday. The sun was so strong the tap in the washbasin ran hot to start with.
Animals seen today included zebras, a large herd of water buffalo, elephants, black backed jackals following impalas, impalas jumping across the road like clock hands. More warthogs (Goodluck called them Pumba), a male Dik-Dik, guinea fowl, beautiful bee eaters, pratincoles, red headed lizard, a large owl, giraffes. There were hippos in the lake ridden by an egret, the hippos kept submerging out of sight.
After I had a cold shower Goodluck took me out again at 4pm. We saw the fur of lions lying down, and also rock hyraxes scurrying about.
We dined with the owner of the camp John of Wayo, and Silvana a carbon zero group person from Switzerland. She didn't approve of people like me flying just to have holidays. John is planning to improve the toilets and raise the tents. We heard the heavy grunting of lions in the distance as we had a chicken barbecue. I turned in early but Silvana because she sat outside later got to see a leopard by the waterhole. Ah well.
