The rain, and parties of schoolchildren, continued
to pursue us as went to
Gibside,
a National Trust place.
Extensive grounds and woods to wander through, at times
we could have used more signs to reassure us we were on the
right path for the purple circuit we opted for. The traffic
cones were an unusual light green colour, perhaps the
National Trust aligning itself with the green movement.
A ruined orangery and hall were on our route, as well as
a Column to Liberty with a statue on top. Best was the
Italianate chapel in good repair with new seats in it.
We tried diving into a bird hide but a group of women
had squatted in it to gossip loudly away, and any avian
birds were long gone.
We had a bite to eat before returning to base camp, which bite to eat disagreed with me later.
In the evening we ate at the Beamish Park Hotel again. We tried the Ravensworth Arms first but were discouraged by the loud music blaring forth.
