Jane Austen's and Gilbert White's homes
Saturday, 13th September 2025

We went to see Jane Austen’s house in Chawton again, a mecca for Jane Austen fans. Virginia resisted buying a tea-towel for £12! A different era totally, separated from the nightmare age we now live in where the rich and powerful can destroy everything. There is a lot of information there about things like plants used for various ailments. Plants related to the drugs we now use for those ailments.

Next stop was Selborne, what was the home of naturalist Gilbert White. A wedding party flowed around the place, the girls in their party frocks ignoring the cold. I learnt a little from the house, nondescript originally meant not previously described to science. Someone else like Jane Austen who has left their mark on history.

We dined again at the Ball and Wicket, very convenient having a good place so close to our holiday retreat!
